She carefully and thoroughly analyses psychiatric evidence identify areas of strength and weakness; and commissions evidence from her own network of experts, in order to challenge detention under the Act. Sarah also advises clients in relation to aftercare matters on leaving hospital, attends Care & Treatment Planning meetings and represents both patients and nearest relatives at Hospital Managers Hearings.

Sarah has an exemplary understanding of the Mental Health Act, its Code of Practice and Tribunal Rules, together with a wealth of experience in representing clients successfully before the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales.

As a competent advocate with rights of audience before both the Magistrates Court & Mental Health Review Tribunal, Sarah advances clear and persuasive arguments in order to challenge the evidence of expert psychiatric witnesses. Furthermore, she also has a wealth of experience representing clients who face serious criminal offences such as murder, sexual assault & arson, whereby the Defendant suffers from a mental disorder and case disposal under the Mental Health Act is appropriate.

Sarah also currently manages a complex Court of Protection caseload, specialising in bringing applications under Section 21A Mental Capacity Act 2005, in connection with the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) framework.

She is regularly instructed by the Official Solicitor, Relevant Person’s Representatives and family members in respect of complex and high-profile proceedings. She frequently secures the freedom or lesser restrictions of people who have been deprived of their liberty for several years.

Sarah adopts a clear and focused approach to each of her cases, whilst working with sensitivity and understanding, truly putting her client’s rights and best interests at the heart of every case.  Sarah is able to engage empathetically with clients, in order to obtain their instructions and ensure that their voice is heard.

She founded the Court of Protection team in 2019 and has developed it exponentially since. She is now supported by a team of 18 truly exceptional lawyers and support staff. She has handpicked each team member to ensure that the highest standards of representation are consistently maintained within her set.

Sarah is passionately committed to the development of the future generation of lawyers and regularly undertakes training with her junior team members. She has mentored several trainees who have since qualified as Solicitors and gone on to attain their own professional accreditations and awards. Sarah’s trainees have been promoted to Associate and Senior Associate positions, attained the Mental Health and Mental Capacity Welfare Accreditations and received awards including ‘Rising Star’ at the Wales Legal Awards 2023.

As well as internal development, Sarah provides external training to advocacy agencies and judges across the UK, who will regularly seek her guidance and expertise to assist in developing the legal and procedural knowledge of their own staff. Sarah’s knowledge of the Court of Protection and its intersection with the Mental Health and Crime spheres is unmatched. This enables Sarah to provide cross jurisdictional advice and support clients in the round.

Despite the significant responsibilities that come with running a large firm, Sarah retains her commitment to working on the ground for her clients. Sarah manages her own complex and diverse Mental Health, Court of Protection and Inquest caseloads, practising at the highest level.

Sarah’s exceptional ability has been professionally recognised by the Law Society, with her currently holding panel accreditations in both Mental Health Law and Criminal Litigation giving her a unique edge in representing complex Court of Protection clients who may be under dual frameworks or engaged in multiple proceedings.

Sarah was also shortlisted at the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards in July 2022 in the Disability Rights category, for her commitment to human rights and access to justice. Notably, she was the only finalist at the entire awards ceremony from Wales.

Sarah’s Court of Protection Team have also been finalists at the 2023 & 2024 Wales Legal Awards.
