The International Sportsperson visa is the UK’s dedicated route for elite athletes and qualified coaches coming to work in the UK. It covers a wide range of sports including football, rugby, cricket, athletics, and many others. It recognises professional sport as having their own particular employment structures, transfer windows, and competitive seasons that do not always fit comfortably within the standard work visa routes.
Unlike most work visas, this route depends on more than just an employer offering a job. It requires a sport-specific endorsement confirming that the individual is genuinely elite or internationally established, and that their move to the UK will benefit the development of their sport here at the highest level. Getting this endorsement right, alongside the visa application itself, requires an understanding of both immigration law and the way each sport’s governing body assesses candidates.
Who can apply for an International Sportsperson visa?
You can apply for an International Sportsperson visa if the following is true:
- You’re an elite sportsperson or a qualified coach.
- You’re internationally established at the highest level of your sport.
- Your employment in the UK will help to develop your sport here at that level.
Your sport’s governing body must endorse your application, confirming that you meet these criteria. You need a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from a UK sports organisation that is licensed by the Home Office to sponsor overseas athletes and coaches. The certificate contains your personal details and information about the role you have been offered, and it can only be used once within three months of being issued. If you are applying to stay for longer than 12 months, you will usually also need to prove that you can speak and understand English to the required standard, unless you are exempt, for example as a national of a majority English-speaking country.
Financial requirement and other evidence
You need to show you have at least £1,270 in personal savings to support yourself when you arrive in the UK, held for a consecutive 28-day period, with the 28th day falling within 31 days of your application. You will not usually need to provide this evidence if you have already been living in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months, or if your employer has confirmed on your certificate of sponsorship that they will cover your costs during your first month, up to £1,270.
Your employer must confirm that your role pays at least the minimum wage and complies with UK rules on working hours. If they do not, your application will be refused, regardless of your standing in your sport.
You will need to provide your travel history for the past five years, and if you are from a country subject to UK tuberculosis screening requirements, you will need to provide a valid TB test certificate. If your partner or children are applying as dependants, they will each need to meet their own financial requirement.
Visa duration and route to settlement
The length of visa you are granted depends on your certificate of sponsorship and the length of your contract or engagement in the UK. You can apply for your visa up to three months before the start date listed on your certificate of sponsorship.
The International Sportsperson route can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years’ continuous residence in the UK, provided the relevant requirements are met. Applicants will need to meet the applicable residence, salary, English language and good character requirements, and at least one period of permission must have been granted for more than 12 months.
International Sportsperson visas can be granted for up to three years at a time. If you continue to meet the requirements of the route and remain sponsored by an eligible organisation, you can apply to extend your permission and there is no limit on the number of extensions available.
Application fees
If you are staying for up to 12 months, the application fee is £340 per person. If you are staying for longer than 12 months, the fee is £819 per person if you are applying from outside the UK, or £943 per person if you are applying inside the UK to extend or switch into this category.
In addition, you, your partner, and any children will each need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, usually £1,035 per year, for the length of the visa granted.
Processing times
Once your application has been submitted and your identity has been verified, decisions are usually made within three weeks for applications submitted from outside the UK and within eight weeks for applications made from inside the UK. Priority services may be available in some circumstances.
How Reeds Solicitors can help
The endorsement stage is often the part of this process that decision-makers, clubs, and athletes underestimate. Each governing body has its own criteria and evidence expectations for what counts as elite or internationally established status, and getting this wrong can delay or derail a signing, particularly where transfer windows or competition schedules leave little room for error.
At Reeds Solicitors, we work with clubs, governing bodies, and individual athletes and coaches to manage the endorsement and visa process together, so that the immigration side of a signing or appointment runs smoothly and on time.
We advise on whether an athlete or coach is likely to meet the endorsement criteria set by the relevant governing body and help prepare the supporting case for endorsement where needed.
We advise clubs and sports organisations on holding and maintaining a sponsor licence, and on issuing certificates of sponsorship correctly and within the required timeframes to avoid delays.
We prepare and review the visa application for the athlete or coach, including financial evidence, English language evidence where required, and travel history documentation, and manage the process through to a decision.
We advise on and manage applications for partners and children accompanying the main applicant, including their own financial requirements.
For athletes and coaches planning a longer-term career in the UK, we advise on how time spent on this route counts towards eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain, and manage settlement applications when the time comes.
